Well, not all the way done

Yes, the book is done.  But that doesn't mean there will be more adding and subtracting words, paragraphs, and chapters (hope not).

Now is the time to find a few people willing to read the book and give their honest opinion.  Come up with a catching short summary of the book, and a title that will grab people's attention.

My editor said for me to find people who like to read.  Have them read the summary, let them look at a short list of titles I have chosen, and ask them which one they like; or give one of their own suggestions.  I thought that was a great idea.  Hang out in front of Barns and Nobles or any other book store will be a day's adventure. You need what people want, not always what you want or like.

The hardest part will be making an eye catching query letter with a killer summary.  I know some publisher/editors' like an outline of your book/story.  That shouldn't be to hard because my editor had me put a summary of all my chapters at the beginning of a new chapter.  That really helped me make sure my story was flowing and not jumping around.

Hope your week-end coming up is wonderful.

  1. That all sounds like good solid advice and at least gives you some ideas on where to go from here. Weekend looks good...birthday coming on Saturday and we are in south Florida spending time with our middle daughter and family. Seeing the granddaughters is birthday present enough!

  2. Hi Jeanette, I'd be willing to read something if you'd like me to. I need someone to do a bit of reading, too... :-)

  4. Hello Jeanette, thanks so much for leaving the comment on my site, as you know they are like gold!

It is worth putting a great deal of work into your short summary. Never was 'write tight' more important. Something has to raise your ms. above all others to engage an agent at first glance. Good luck, I'll be following your progress.
