Question

What do you do to motivate yourself to write?  What if it's hard (like it is for me) to push yourself to motivate yourself to write?

  1. Sadly, I don't motivate myself to write what I should be writing. Having a blog schedule pushes me to have content on my blogs when I'm supposed to have it up, but my WIP's and planned books lie dormant while I pursue the distractions and obligations of my life. It is hard for me to push myself to write things other than blog posts and sometimes those are difficult to get done as well.

  2. I agree with Arlee; having a blog helps. I also have this great book of magazine clippings. Have I told you about that? Just go to a random page and start writing what you see. I like to practice using my five senses as I write; i.e., taste, touch, smell, sight, sound. I have also gone to a random book on the shelf and have opened to a random page. Closing my eyes I point to a random sentence. I use that first sentence to start writing. Hope these ideas help.

  3. Wow, I didn't know that Kathryn. You and Arlee do keep busy. I like your idea and will give it a try. It might help me write out an idea I have easier. Thanks to both of you for your comments.

  4. For me, motivation comes either early in the morning or around dinnertime (the afternoons are sluggish for me) and if I open word before going onto the internet, I can actually get something done. I also think that if a project really excites you then you will be more likely to pick it up. I sometimes read writing-related material or books to feel inspired if the candle is dying. Sometimes goal setting works (but I do it in pencil because I am always moving the date back! LOL). Sometimes reading what I have written already gives me motivation when I realize it may not be as awful as I thought. Sometimes walking through an office supply store and picking out new notebooks or pens will do the trick! Good luck!!

  5. Thank you Natalie. I do carry around a small notebook in my purse. If a thought crosses my mind, I write it down. But then I'm like Neville, always forgetting even to look where I wrote it down. Lol. I need to set a time and stick with it. I need to ban myself from fb and other blogs.

  6. The hardest part for me is always just getting started. I will go to great lengths not to be started, but I've realize more and more that once I get started, I don't want to stop. When going about tasks for the day, I've also started to ask myself if what I'm doing helps with my bottom line of writing creative works, and more often than not, it doesn't. So then that's my clue to get back to writing. Just wish I was faster...
