Word Magic

In my home study class, on of the books I received was WORD MAGIC for WRITERS by Cindy Rogers.

It's full of exercises and interesting info.  It's a book that you can jump to different chapters that will help you to become a keener reader and a more interesting writer.  A creative writer.  someone whose words delight or charm, persuade or empower, captivate or inspire.  someone who knows the alchemy of baking powder and baking soda. (intro to the book)

Here is a sample of one exercise:

Humanizing Things.

Choose something form the first list below and assign it a human attribute from this list.  complete the sentence.

List 1:  window, columbine, cave, tree branch, car engine, wind, rain, fence.

List 2: beckons, kisses, bends, stretches, sways, winks, coughs, belches, sings, yawns, nods, dances.

Here is my sentence:

The car engine belches with the last drop of gas.

The fact that I was give words to work with, helped me kick my imagination in gear.

So...What neat sentence can you come up with?

  1. Hi Jeanette,
Thanks for the review and for including the example. Such a simple exercise but very effective! I've just ordered a copy of the book to use in a writing retreat I'm planning. Your timing couldn't have been better.

    Thanks and happy writing,
    Anne
